JOB SUMMARY:
The role of the oncology nurse is an integral member of our team who is vital to the success of our ability to care for a special patient population. This individual will require the ability to communicate with the patient and their families and support team compassionately and effectively. A strong work focus is required to deliver professionalism and teamwork. Nursing skills to effectively assess, plan, and carry out comprehensive care plans.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
- Performs general nursing care to patients by following established guidelines and procedures.
- Provide patient care based on established guidelines, standards of care, and federal and state laws and regulations.
- Prepares patients for physician examination. Screens patients for appropriate information.
- Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information. Charts tests, examinations and other pertinent information required for the patient record.
- Obtain patient consent for care and ensure patient confidentiality.
- Maintain quality of patient care and plan with the administration and medical staff in relation to the care of patients.
- Execute prescribed treatments and medical interventions; administer prescribed medications, and chemotherapy agents and monitors and documents treatment progress and patient response.
- Coordinate with physicians, other health providers, and community resources to coordinate patient treatment.
- Educate patients and families about health status, health maintenance, and management of acute and chronic conditions.
- Document patient assessment and intervention data using established medical record forms and electronic systems and documentation practices.
- Participate in collaborative teams to improve patient care processes and outcomes.
- Track quality assurance data and monitor for acute and chronic care management.
- Arranges for patient testing and admissions. Instructs patients regarding collection of samples and tests
- Responds to and refers incoming telephone calls. Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment.
- Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
- Performs other duties as required.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- A graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- One year of professional nursing experience, preferably in a clinic setting. Experience working with oncology patients preferred.
- Nebraska State Registered Nurse license

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires full range of motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids. Frequent exposure to toxic substances. Exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
