LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Hematology-Oncology’s Radiation Oncology team has implemented the cutting-edge Aktina SRS Cones system with its Elekta LINAC, further advancing the precision and efficiency of radiation therapy for patients in the Lincoln area.
“We are thrilled to be able to offer patients an even more precise treatment than ever before,” said Dr. Kevin Yiee, radiation oncologist at NHO Radiation Oncology’s North Lincoln location. “The cones allow us to treat with submillimeter accuracy, giving us confidence that we are precise even down to half a millimeter—the size of a sharp pencil point. This enables us to target extremely small areas, such as individual nerves in conditions like trigeminal neuralgia, and to address tumors at their earliest stages.”
The Aktina SRS Cone system is designed with lead-based interlocking cones and stainless-steel sleeves featuring precisely engineered channels and grooves that align with the applicator. This design ensures that each cone, upon insertion, confirms its correct size for the programmed dosage by interacting with built-in safety switches. The integrated control software then verifies the match between the installed cone and the programmed treatment plan before proceeding, allowing for automated treatment verification. This technology enhances efficiency while ensuring the correct dosage and treatment plan are delivered to each patient.
A key benefit of this innovation is reduced radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues, minimizing complications, and helping preserve critical functions such as brain, lung, heart, liver, and spinal cord health. Additionally, the enhanced precision enables the possibility of retreatment should a tumor recur in a previously radiated area. In many cases, this technology also allows for shorter treatment courses, often requiring just a single session.
Nebraska Hematology-Oncology remains committed to providing state-of-the-art treatment options, ensuring the best possible outcomes for patients undergoing radiation therapy.
