JOB TITLE: Psychiatric Advanced Practitioner

JOB SUMMARY:
The Advanced Practitioner will plan, direct, and evaluate the psychiatric care of hematology and oncology patients in ambulatory health services; diagnose and treat acute and chronic mental health illnesses, order selected laboratory testing, offer referrals, write prescriptions, and counsel patients. The Advanced Practitioner will also work with provider colleagues in the psychiatric care and treatment of hematology and oncology patients.   

REPORTS TO: Lead Advanced Practitioner and Medical Director for Psychiatry   

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This highly trained individual should be knowledgeable in advanced health assessments and decision-making skill sets, prepared through a formal educational program that meets criteria established by the profession, and is certified by examination by an approved certifying body. 
  • The APRN or PA-C works independently and in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide psychiatric care to individuals with hematology and oncology-related diagnoses.  Provision of care includes but is not limited to: comprehensive psychiatric assessment through history taking and physical examination; ordering, conducting, and interpreting diagnostic tests; prescription of pharmacological and non-pharmacological agents and treatments; identifying, developing, implementing, and evaluating a plan of care for patients; and providing psychiatric-specific teaching and supportive counseling to patients, families, and groups.
  • Provide psychiatric care in an outpatient hematology oncology setting including diagnostic evaluations, follow up visits, and consultations to individual mental health care needs.
  • Performs psychiatric evaluations for patients with new or prior psychiatric disorders based off the DSM-5 TR
  • Performs physical examinations, specifically mental status examinations and others when appropriate.
  • Implements individualized psychiatric treatment plans including prescribing pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions and ordering diagnostic tests as indicated.
  • Knowledgeable of psychopharmacology as it pertains to the patient population being treated and writing prescriptions.
  • Coordinates referrals to other healthcare professionals, support groups, counseling, community agencies as needed.
  • Provide patient education, specifically around issues related to their psychiatric diagnoses, medications, treatment adherence, supportive care, and ways to care for themselves.
  • Evaluates patients for the need for a higher level of care.
  • Acts as a resource person for decisions, planning, and policies affecting the health of patients.
  • Accurately documents patient visits into EMR system in a timely, concise, and clear manner.
  • Provide consultation to medical staff about diagnosis, treatment, and/or the need for psychiatric medication.
  • Collaborates with staff to identify patient needs and to help develop a plan to meet these needs.
  • Serves as a member of committees dealing with health care.
  • Provide psychiatric care alongside the patient’s hematology-oncology care team to understand the context of the patient’s acute or chronic hematology-oncology diagnosis and communicating that for patients.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant program
  • Current clinical and professional experience including the ability to perform within the scope of practice for a Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant
  • Master of Science

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to lift 10 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • May be exposed to adverse indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, bloodborne pathogens, physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.) and chemical hazards.
